Benefits of Blueberries

Blueberries are a super-fruit that is not only tasty, they have numerous health benefits.  They have the highest antioxidant capacity of all the fruit.  The phyto-chemical compounds in the blueberry help rid of harmful oxygen-derived free radicals from the body protect the human body against cancers, aging, degenerative diseases and infections.  Research studies suggested that chlorogenic acid in these berries help lower blood sugar levels and control blood-glucose levels in type 2 diabetes (http://www.nutrition-and –you.com/blueberries.html).

  A new research conducted by the University of Michigan Cardiovascular Center, suggests that blueberries may help reduce belly fat and risk factors for cardiovascular disease and metabolic syndrome. A blueberry enriched powder was mixed into rat diet and the other rats had no blueberry diet, after 90 days the rats that had the blueberry’s had less abdominal fat, lower triglycerides, lower cholesterol and improved fasting glucose and insulin sensitivity.  The group had lower body weight, lower total fat mass and reduced liver mass than the rats on the non- blueberry diet.   Blueberries are also known as a brain food, due to its anti-oxidant effect on brain cells and neuron tissues.  The blueberries have healing capability to damaged brain cells and work on keeping your memory sharp.  Researchers found that diets rich in blueberries improved both the learning capability and motor skills of aging animals, making them mentally equivalent to younger ones.   The fiber in blueberries are great for digestion and constipation, which is highly beneficial for the Cancer patient.  Since blueberries contain anti-oxidants , studies published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry show that phenolic compounds can inhibit colon cancer cell proliferation and induce apoptosis.  A 34% reduction I ovarian cancer risk was also seen in women who ate blueberries.  One of the most amazing facts about blueberries is that it is a mood enhancer and works as an anti-depressant, without the side effects. 

The best type of blueberries to purchase would be at the local market, and always look for the organic blueberries that are free of pesticides.
